The Queen In the Hook

The Queen Mary 2 spent a few hours in Red Hook today, inaugurating the new passenger ship terminal. I rode down in time to catch its 5pm departure.

Sunset In Red Hook

I had a rehearsal in Red Hook this evening, and got there early (it’s one long downhill ride, so biking there takes about ten minutes), so I rode past the old Revere sugar factory and took some photos.

Look now, it won’t last

This morning in Brooklyn Heights

I remember these grinder trucks from when I was a kid, and even then I didn’t understand how they stayed in business. This guy was driving slowly down Hicks Street, holding his hand out the window to hit his bell slowly with what looked like a metal version of the drumstick with which you hit your toy drum when you were a kid.

Alive and Kicking

Fats Domino is one of the true kings of rock&roll, the man who did for the piano what Chuck Berry did for the guitar (albeit with a considerable boost from Johnnie Johnson’s piano). He took the the New Orleans boogie-woogie piano of people like Meade Lux Lewis, Champion Jack Dupree and Professor Longhair, and turned it into great rock records that sold to white teenagers in the millions. While he’s best known for songs like “Ain’t That a Shame” and “Blueberry Hill,” he put 37 records into the Top 40 between 1955 and 1963 and his largely forgotten “lesser songs” are better than some people’s gold records.

He’s back in New Orleans, and he’s got a new album out, Alive and Kickin’, which is being sold to benefit a foundation for New Orleans musicians. The record was recorded several years ago, but it’s outstanding, with a bunch of new originals, a very interesting new version of “Ain’t That a Shame,” and some old classics like “Every Night About This Time.”

It’s for a good cause, and it’s a great record, so go pick up a copy today: http://tipitinasfoundation.org/

Accomplishments

I wrote (or rather, finished writing) two new songs this weekend, including “The Scars Of Robert Moses” which I started in Toronto last year. And a third is on the way, so there’ll be a lot of new material for April 21.

And in other news, I passed 8th grade math.

shunn seems to appreciate the humor in his spam more than I do, but I just got domain-spammed with an ad for the “ultimate online pharmaceutical,” with each message featuring a different name in the from line. I love them! What a crowd!
