Sunset In Red Hook

I had a rehearsal in Red Hook this evening, and got there early (it’s one long downhill ride, so biking there takes about ten minutes), so I rode past the old Revere sugar factory and took some photos.

Wow, some great photos. The one with the smokestack looks a lot like the cover of Animals by Pink Floyd. I guess old factories don’t come in a lot of varieties.

    Is the wrecking ball coming?

Most likely, it is. That’s the Revere Sugar Factory. Here’s a map showing how badly the Red Hook waterfront is going to be ruined:

      1. Sunny’s Bar
      2. Future site of Fairway
      3. The Revere Sugar Factory, recently sold to a mall developer
      4. Ikea, and its disgustingly large parking lot — these are old Civil War era buildings that will be torn down
      5. For geographical context, that’s the entrance to the Battery Tunnel
  3. The Joys of Digital Photography

X & I were just re-looking at Ireland photos yesterday and remarking on how stunning digital photography makes everything look.

I can hear the strains of Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” in my head.

    Purty.

Sorry you had to cancel Toronto.

Re: The Joys of Digital Photography

I was remarking to Bill and Bob last night how surprisingly beautiful cell phone photos can be. I took those pictures with my Treo. The cheap lens and crappy light meter can sometimes do amazingly beautiful things to the sky. I’ve gotten some startling results with the cell phone.

Pictures with the real camera will follow tonight or tomorrow; the Queen Mary is docking in Red Hook so I’m going to back down there with the digita camera.

I accidentally deleted the map from the post above showing the locations of these photos, so here it is again:

    1. Sunny’s Bar
    2. Future site of Fairway
    3. The Revere Sugar Factory, recently sold to a mall developer
    4. Ikea, and its disgustingly large parking lot — these are old Civil War era buildings that will be torn down
