Why I Live In New York City

Kickass harmonica playing on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Madison Square Park. Drinks with (and, unfortunately, all over) friends at Live Bait. And then night two of the Sheriff Sessions, listening to and sitting with some of NYC”s best roots musicians.

Phil Wiggins and John Cephas (pictured) are the best acoustic blues duo playing today. They play the Piedmont blues that originated in the Carolinas, and Delta blues as well, and Phil is a soulful harp player who can be flashy when he wants to be, but is better when he isn’t.

The Sessions last night were headlined by Bruce Molsky, a gentle and humorous old-time player who sat alone onstage with a fiddle singing songs a century old, played gutbucket fingerstyle blues on guitar, and frailed beautifully on the banjo. “I hope you like fiddle music,” he said. “Because there will be a problem if not.”

And now I’m off to Staten Island to play a gig of my own.

The Sheriff Sessions

(“Punch in the presence of the passenger…”) Along with Chris Eldridge (pictured here with Thile, he’s a member of the Infamous Stringdusters) and a few more top-tier jamgrass players, they did a stunning set. Rather than the endless noodling of most jam bands, they were dynamic, tight, and concise; in short they kicked ass.

Tonight’s headliner is the great old-time musician Bruce Molsky, but call before you come; last night sold out and tonight probably will as well.

iPhoto 08: Beware

Apple made (and did not announce or document) changes to the export API in the new version of iPhoto. These disable every third-party plugin, including exporters for Flickr, LJ, Facebook, etc. So don’t install it unless all you want to do is look at your photos on your computer.

It’s got some cool organizational features (and some really stupid interface errors) but it’s not worth it by a long shot. 🙁 And in Apple’s ongoing efforts to out-Microsoft Microsoft, the program is called “iPhoto 08” and is part of “iLife 08” but is actually iPhoto 7.

iDespair.

EDIT: ConnectedFlow has released an updated version of the Flickr exporter. You must remove all previous versions of the plugin before installing it, and you’re best off removing all third-party plugins because if iPhoto doesn’t like one of them, it just refuses to do anything at all when you choose File/Export.

To remove plugins:
– Go to Applications
– Right-click iPhoto
– Choose “Show Package Contents”
– Open Contents/Plugins
– delete FlickrExport.iPhotoEx and any other third-party plugins

IDIOTS!

Steve Earle

Steve Earle

“I used to be a folksinger, because I had trouble with authority of any kind,” he said. “Then I found out there were folksinging authorities, and I had to give it up.”

He flouted any number of authorities, starting of course with his political songs. He said people have asked him whether he’s worried that the songs about the Iraq war on his two most recent albums will become dated. “God, I hope so,” he said. Halfway through his set, he brought out a DJ, who played and scratched beats behind him as he played old-time banjo.

He played a mixture of songs from his new album, Washington Square Serenade, and albums going all the way back to Guitar Town.

Allison Moorer, to whom Earle got married last year, opened the show and sang a few duets with him at the end. He returned for encores including “Hardcore Troubador,” which one audience member was particularly insistent about requesting (“Steve, please play it or I won’t get laid tonight,” the lout’s girlfriend shouted at one point, leaving Earle speechless for the only time that night), and closing with “Chrismastime In Washington.”

A concert at the World Trade Center?

Nick Lowe

In fact, I was going to see a concert in front of the rebuilt 7 World Trade Center, which is not quite the same thing; even the original was part of the WTC in name only.

Nick Lowe closed his main set with “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding.” He sang it slowly, wistfully, with the cursed Deutsche Bank building looming in the background (those diagonal lines of lights behind him in the photo are the lighting on the staircases in that hulk).

As I walk on through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
Where are the strong? And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony, sweet harmony?

And every time I feel it slipping away
It just makes me want to cry
What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding?

Also on the bill were The Holmes Brothers, a great NYC gospel group, and Olabelle, a rock band that plays lots of traditional country tunes.

A Holmes Brothers anecdote: Many years ago mikeskliar and I were playing a bar in Hell’s Kitchen, and in between set the bartender pulled me aside and said, “Popsy Dixon from the Holmes Brothers is here and wants to sing a song.” So we called him up and thankfully Mike knew the chords to “Georgia On My Mind” and I got to play harmonica in answer to that spectacular voice. It was quite a moment.
