Steinbeck, Salinas and Santa Cruz

I spent much of the last week in Steinbeck country. Photos below, or you can view the gallery.

Brooklyn Noir 2: The Classics

The first anthology was a brilliant idea, full of great, original stories. Now that this has expanded into a franchised series (Dublin Noir, Chicago Noir, Baltimore Noir) it’s not nearly as interesting, and this second collection, of reprinted stories, has its moments, but is not nearly as good.

On to a story-by-story review

Today’s Photo Quiz

I took this photo Saturday morning in College Point.

Any guesses what this is?

Live! It Was Saturday Night

A few weeks ago, an impromptu band consisting of (left to right) Tom Ricciuti, me, Mike Skliar and Ken Applebaum, recorded a version of Bob Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You,” a long-distance contribution to a Toronto gathering of Dylan fans. You can see it on YouTube, and as I get permission from some other performers I’ve worked with, I’ll be posting more videos in the future.

Great Night Underground

The show last night at the Underground was great fun, so thank you everyone for coming and sharing the evening with us. The next show there will probably be in June, and in the meantime check my site for other shows, including a May 13 jazz gig in Red Hook.

Also, stay tuned for more music — over the next few weeks I’m going to be recording and posting acoustic versions of the new songs I did last night, including “Hummer,” my latest in the funny-political-song genre, “The Scars Of Robert Moses,” the latest in my NYC-history genre, and “Home.”

Tomorrow Night, Underground

Mike Skliar and I will be back at the Underground Lounge tomorrow night on the Upper West Side. I’m going to start off with a half-hour set of new material, including some songs that have been previewed online (“A Little Bit More,” about the transit strike) in earlier versions, and others that haven’t been recorded or performed at all yet.

The show starts at 8:30 sharp; details are at my site. Mike will do a full set at 9 p.m., for which I’ll join him on harmonica and probably do a few more of my own songs.
